Although there has been talk for a long time about a proposal by the employers' association to reorganise the holidays and eliminate the long weekends that cause stoppages in industry and the economy, little or nothing has changed compared to other years. It is a debate that has perhaps been postponed for too long.

The national holidays are New Year's Day on January 1, Three Kings' Day on January 6, Good Friday on March 25, Assumption of the Virgin on August 15, National Holiday of Spain on October 12, All Saints' Day on November 1, Constitution Day on December 6, and the Immaculate Conception on December 8.
The days that are traditionally public holidays but which this year fall on a Sunday are May 1 and December 25. The Autonomous Communities can move the rest of these holidays to Monday, since all of them have the possibility of having a total of 12 public holidays in total, including national holidays, as well as two local holidays.
May 2nd has been kept as a public holiday in Aragon, Castile and Leon, Andalusia, the Canary Islands, Asturias and Extremadura, as well as Madrid, which celebrates the day of the Community. All of them, except the Canary Islands, the Basque Country, Galicia and La Rioja, have moved the holiday from December 25th to Monday 26th. Another of the holidays with great tradition, Holy Thursday, is also a public holiday in all communities except Catalonia, where it is celebrated on Easter Monday, March 28th along with the Basque Country, La Rioja, Navarre, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands.
As regards other replaceable national holidays, Madrid, Navarre, the Basque Country and La Rioja celebrate Santiago Apóstol on 25 July, which is also the national day of Galicia. In the case of San José on 19 March, which falls on a Saturday this year, it remains a public holiday only in the Valencian Community, Murcia and Melilla.
