This week, coinciding with International Women's Day, the Ministry of Economy and Business presented the "White Paper on Women in Technology ," one of the most comprehensive studies on the topic to date, with data specific to Spain. These figures once again demonstrate the significant gaps that exist between men and women in the technology sector and highlight the negative consequences this has not only now but also in the future.
This isn't the first time I've addressed this issue on the blog: I did so almost a year ago, when I proposed the Decalogue to Increase the Presence of Women in Tech (and Management) . I'm returning to the topic again now to highlight some of the data and ideas the White Paper highlights. I encourage you to read the 158 pages of the study; in the meantime, here's a summary:
Employment opportunities are in ICT, but there is a lack of women in this sector.
The European Union indicates that within just two years, 45% of jobs will be related buy phone number list to the digital environment. But Europe currently has a digital skills gap, and it is estimated that by 2020, Europe could face a shortage of nearly 900,000 ICT professionals. It is a sector with great potential, but one in which women are particularly lacking: in Europe, only 30% of the approximately 7 million people working in the information and communications technology sector are women . The starting point is therefore uneven.
In Spain, approximately 24% of students enrolled in engineering, industrial production, and construction were women in 2015, the same percentage as the OECD average. The proportion of women in information and communication technology (ICT) studies was only 12%, below the OECD average of 19% . Spanish public authorities play a key role in reducing the gender gap through guidance and information services that ensure equal opportunities for men and women when choosing a field of study.
Finding solutions to the digital gender gap requires a multifaceted approach that encompasses all the realities of digital society, such as entrepreneurship, digital platforms, and new career paths, among others.
